building regs
Changes in Building Regulations to enforce the desired increased levels of energy efficiency are shortly to become even stricter. In the mean time, apart from condensing boilers, the main effect on the upgrading householder is ‘controls’. The system has to achieve ‘boiler interlock’, which simply means the boiler is controlled to not run and waste energy when there is no call for heat. As a basic requirement, the property must have separate thermostatically controlled ‘zones’ for living and sleeping areas. Heating and hot water must be separately time controlled with stored water being thermostatically controlled. Best practice goes further but is usually achievable with little difficulty.
